1KubeCon Puts Latest Cloud-Native Technologies on Center Stage
The KubeCon + CloudNativeCon North America 2017 conference, which ran from Dec. 6-8 in Austin, Texas, highlighted the latest and greatest in cloud-native computing technologies. The open-source Cloud Native Computing Foundation (CNCF) got its start in July 2015 with a single project: the Kubernetes container orchestration platform, originally built by Google. Over the last two years, the CNCF and Kubernetes have expanded significantly, with new capabilities, projects and participation, which were all on display at the KubeCon event. Among the newsworthy events at the conference were the 1.0 milestone releases for a number of projects, including containerd, CoreDNS, Fluentd and Jaeger. In this slide show, eWEEK looks at some of the highlights of KubeCon + CloudNativeCon.
2CNCF Now Has 14 Projects
In July 2015, the only project on the CNCF’s roster was Kubernetes. Now, the CNCF is home to 14 open-source cloud-native projects.
3CNCF Has Grown to 160 Members
The level of corporate participation in the CNCF has also grown in the last two years. When the foundation started, there were 28 member organizations; now there are 160.
4Containerd Reaches 1.0 Milestone
Docker launched the open-source containerd effort in December 2016 as a way to enable a more open and transparent approach to container engine development. The effort became a CNCF project on March 29 and officially reached the 1.0 milestone on Dec. 5.
5CoreDNS 1.0 Improves Kubernetes Performance
The CoreDNS project provides DNS (Domain Name Service) and service discovery capabilities for Kubernetes and cloud-native architectures. The CoreDNS 1.0 milestone is a stable release that provides improved performance for Kubernetes users.
6Fluentd 1.0 Is a Data Collector Project
Another CNCF project that has reached the 1.0 milestone is the Fluentd data collector project. Fluentd joined the CNCF in November 2016 as the foundation’s fourth project and was originally developed by software firm Treasure Data.
7Jaeger 1.0 Helps Find Bottlenecks
The Jaeger project has reached the 1.0 milestone as well. Jaeger was originally developed by ride-sharing firm Uber and became a CNCF project on Sept. 13. Jaeger is a distributed tracing system that can be used to help find application performance bottlenecks.
8Kubernetes Powers ‘Game of Thrones’
At KubeCon, developers from HBO explained why they chose to use Kubernetes to help power their streaming content service for the popular “Game of Thrones” TV show.
