Andy Jassy, senior vice president of Amazon Web Services, kicked off the re:Invent conference with the announcement of CloudTrail, a service that logs all the API calls that are made to AWS resources. That logging information is critical for auditing and compliance of cloud services.
3Virtual Desktops Come to the Cloud
The new Amazon WorkSpaces service brings virtual desktops into the cloud in a move to provide greater efficiency. “The ability to centrally manage desktops makes it much easier to manage them,” Jassy said.

The AWS Test Drive program lets prospective cloud users try out apps running in the cloud for free. At re:Invent, Amazon expanded the offering with 30 new Test Drive apps options with new solutions from Oracle, Microsoft, Infor, Sophos, Accenture, MicroStrategy and Splunk.

During his keynote address, Amazon CTO Werner Vogels triumphantly announced that, after many customer requests, the open-source PostgreSQL database is now supported on the AWS Cloud Relational Database Service (RDS).

In addition to the C3 instances, Vogels announced the upcoming debut of the I2 instance type, which is intended for high-performance random I/O operations. Amazon is targeting the I2 instances to serve transactional system workloads, including NoSQL databases.

Amazon’s DynamoDB NoSQL database is getting faster with the addition of global secondary indexes. Vogels explained that the new feature will speed up all types of searches that mobile apps make in the cloud.
10Redshift Data Warehouse Gets Cross-Region Snapshot for Reliability
The Amazon Redshift data warehouse service is getting a major reliability boost with the introduction of cross-region snapshots. The new functionality will enable administrators to put their data in multiple geographic locations to help provide another layer of backup and disaster recovery for users.
11Amazon Kinesis Provides Real-Time Processing for Streaming Data
Vogels’ final announcement of the re:Invent 2013 conference was the debut of the Kinesis managed data streaming service. Kinesis could help to enable the Internet of things era by connecting sensor data from the physical world with the cloud-based processing engine.
