      In the fourth quarter of 2012, a nominal increase in Vermont’s average connection speed allowed it to become the state with the highest average speed at 10.8M bps, a 3.8 percent uptick from the prior quarter but a 38 percent year-over-year gain.

      A 3.8 percent decline quarter-over-quarter in its average connection speed, to 10.6 Mbps, was still strong enough for Delaware to land in second place. Delaware saw a 29 percent year-over-year gain.

      4The Nation’s Capital Speeds Along (Online, That Is)

      Washington D.C.’s 10.2M-bps average connection speed in the fourth quarter of 2012 placed it third overall, though speeds fell 5.8 percent quarter-over-quarter despite rising 37 percent year-over-year.

      New Hampshire’s average connection speeds clocked in a 10.1M bps, sliding 2.5 percent from the previous quarter but up 25 percent year-over-year.

      6Way Out West, and All Alone

      Utah was the only state not in New England or on the East Coast to place in the top ten for connecting speeds, boasting an average of 9.5M bps, up 4.5 percent quarter-over-quarter and 26 percent year-over-year.

      7Old Line State is Online

      Maryland landed in sixth place, boasting average connection speeds of 9.3M bps, up 5.8 percent quarter-over-quarter and a whopping 44 percent year-over-year.

      Little Rhode Island, the country’s smallest state, managed to clock an average connection speed of 9.3M bps, up 2.2 percent quarter-over-quarter and 25 percent year-over-year.

      9Bay State Keeps Up the Pace

      Massachusetts’ average connection speeds improved 1.9 percent quarter-over-quarter and 29 percent from the previous year, to 9.3M bps.

      The Nutmeg State improved average speeds by 31 percent from 2011 and 1.4 percent from the previous quarter, to 9.2M bps.

      The Garden State rounds out the top 10 with a 9.1M bps average speed, an impressive 45 percent increase from 2011.
