Backup and efficient recovery of data stores generally has been the bane of many a storage administrator’s existence because processes are too often overly complicated, cannot scale to large volumes properly and need a lot of time-consuming personal babysitting to make sure all the boxes are checked.

When data inevitably gets sidetracked somewhere in IT Never-Never Land, the process gets even more sticky.

Hewlett Packard Enterprise has taken all these factors into consideration and wants to fix them. On Oct. 17, the Palo Alto, Calif.-based company introduced its Adaptive Backup and Recovery Suite, an integrated suite of tools that uses operational and file analytics to automate and streamline the chore of data protection.

Automating the dreadful tasks of data backup and recovery? Those are words of salvation for storage administrators.

The HPE Adaptive Backup and Recovery Suite prioritizes critical workloads, predicts resource conflicts and expedites recommended remediation steps to drive efficiency, reliability and cost savings into the backup process.

It also provides end-to-end transparency into backup, recovery and security systems. The suite combines HPE Storage Optimizer, HPE Data Protector and HPE Backup Navigator with new-generation information optimization, analytics and protection tools to efficiently safeguard and backup enterprise data across disparate repositories and locations.

Current DR Equipment Not Built for Large-Scale Deployments

Conventional data protection and management tools were not designed to handle growing volumes of data, new waves of on-premises and mobile applications and new data protection rules, such as the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). The fact that the vast new internet of things market is quickly progressing is cause for more concern for businesses that want to be intentional and professional at storing, accessing and securing business data.

The Adaptive Backup and Recovery Suite centers on the use of HPE’s business analytics to help administrators solve storage and data recovery problems. And why not? Analytics apps are finding use cases in just about every corner of the IT world.

“The increasing amount of data, combined with antiquated information management systems, is holding back organizations from developing new products and services,” said Nick Sundby, consulting director of IDC’s European Storage Group.

“A software suite like this one, which helps organizations from the start to the end of their data protection journey—and that analyzes, protects and optimizes the backup processes and infrastructure in a secure, automated way—will set the benchmark for self-optimizing backup and recovery solutions.”

The HPE suite enables administrators to:

—Manage and optimize unstructured information: HPE Storage Optimizer helps companies analyze, classify and manage data based on its value. Users can understand and control the information landscape to reduce costs, meet backup service-level agreements (SLAs) and reduce compliance risks.

—Protect data based on its value: HPE Data Protector serves as the core protection engine for comprehensive backup and recovery that is centrally managed. Users can consolidate and standardize backup and replication to improve reliability and enhance business resiliency—while reducing cost and complexity.
—Make the backup process more efficient: HPE Backup Navigator provides analytics, reporting and data monitoring. Users can identify protection gaps, run rapid root-cause analysis for issues in order to help IT departments plan for future backup resource and proactively resolve errors and improve resource utilization.

      Availability and Pricing

The HPE Adaptive Backup and Recovery suite is available immediately. In addition, the suite is optimized for HPE’s storage portfolio, including its StoreOnce, 3PAR StoreServ and StoreEver offerings. Starting at $6,200 per terabyte, the suite will be offered at flexible pricing levels based on the capacity of data managed.
