China’s Letv Cloud Computing on Nov. 1 announced a partnership with Intel to develop and commercialize new and progressive types of visual technology, such as 360-degree panorama, augmented reality and virtual reality.
Letv (Leshi Internet Information & Technology) is China’s counterpart to YouTube. It is headquartered in Beijing and is one of the largest online video providers in China. The company recently opened a Silicon Valley office in Redwood City, Calif.
Letv Cloud optimizes offline and real-time video transcoding solutions based on Intel architecture. It claims to double transcoding speed on the server based on Intel’s Xeon E5/E3 processor by using multi-core features of Intel XeonTM E5/E3 Processor, employing Intel AVX2/AVX/SSE vectored instructions and integrating Media Server Studio.
Targeting next-generation CDN-SEN (adaptive network) video launched by Letv Cloud, the two companies will cooperate on coded and decoding techniques, chips, architecture, and other new components. The overall intention is to improve the video streaming experience from the cloud.
Will Build Video Tech Lab
As part of the deal, the companies will build a video technology lab for development of new cloud-based video technology. With a primary goal of improving real-time video processing speeds, Letv and Intel teams also will build a new video transcoding system based on Intel’s original IA architecture that will optimize Letv Cloud’s offline and double real-time video transcoding capabilities.
Letv Cloud and Intel will use their own IP in multi-screen viewership and in the Internet of things to build integrated hardware and software solutions ranging from front-end devices and intelligent gateways to cloud end-to-end for users, ultimately providing high-performance video.
In the next few years, Intel and Letv will jointly coordinate global ecosystem resources to build an end-to-end global video cloud ecosystem.
Founded in November 2004 by Jia Yueting, Letv is engaged in myriad businesses, spanning Internet TV, video production and distribution, smart gadgets and large-screen applications to e-commerce, eco-agriculture and Internet-linked electric cars, which were announced in late 2014.
New Smartphone Brand
Recently, it has launched three smartphones under its Le brand: the Le 1, Le 1 Pro and the Le Max. Letv also includes a film production company called LeVision Pictures.
The company has about 5,000 full-time employees and is expanding to other countries, including the U.S. and India.
