Qualcomm subsidiary, Qualcomm Life, which specializes in connected health solutions, announced the acquisition of Capsule Technologies, a provider of medical device integration and clinical data management solutions.

Capsule’s medical device integration and clinical data management platform enables data collection, electronic medical records (EMRs) and health IT system integration and monitoring into an ecosystem of connected devices inside the hospital.

The acquisition of Capsule extends Qualcomm Life’s connected health offerings into the hospital in an effort to create a more seamless care continuum from hospital to home and all points in between.

“Our vision has always been a world with access to health care anytime, anywhere,” Rick Valencia, senior vice president and general manager of Qualcomm Life, told eWEEK. “For years, Qualcomm Life has been helping shape a new standard of care for chronic care management and remote patient monitoring. This post-acute care segment is exceptionally important for improving outcomes and reducing unnecessary hospitalizations.”

Valencia said the acquisition of Capsule extends Qualcomm Life’s connected health offerings into the hospital, ultimately creating a more seamless care continuum from hospital to home and all points in between.

“By combining Qualcomm Life’s wireless expertise and ecosystem of connected medical devices outside of the hospital with Capsule’s leadership for connecting medical devices, EMRs and IT systems across the hospital enterprise, Qualcomm Life is creating one of the world’s largest open connected health ecosystems to deliver intelligent care everywhere,” he explained.

Capsule’s smart networking goes beyond device integration by delivering timely clinical data to various in-hospital decision support systems, alarm and notification systems and asset management tools.

“Health care is rapidly shifting from analog to digital and to lower cost settings. The data generated from medical devices and sensors presents an exceptional opportunity; previously disparate symptoms, biometrics, vitals and patient activities can now be integrated,” Valencia noted. “Qualcomm Life and Capsule can capture this data across care settings and seamlessly integrate it with multiple systems, applications, portals, or EMRs.”

He explained this integration will reveal insights that will enable actionable decision-making by providers and activate patients in self-care.

“This data liquidity and accessibility will unlock value by enabling systems and companies to securely connect, share, and develop breakthrough intelligence and care efficiencies,” he said. “This is changing the way consumers receive and act on their health information, care for themselves, engage providers, and interact with technology. Qualcomm Life is placing consumers at the center of care by making care accessible, intelligent and personalized.”
