Dell Boomi Launches API Management Cloud Service

Dell Boomi on March 18 added some key functionality to its cloud integration platform: full API (application programming interface) lifecycle management.

This addition boosts Boomi into a multi-purpose platform as a service (PaaS) that supports not only all major integration use cases, but also master data management and API management.

Master data management keeps track of every bit of data in its lifecycle: how it was used or not used, whether it was stored or archived, or whether it was deleted. It comprises the processes, governance, policies, standards and tools that define and manage the critical data of an organization to provide a single point of reference for all users.

MDM is pretty much mandatory for large enterprises; more and more, however, mid-range companies are looking at installing this function, due largely to quickly filling data stores and increasing availability of cloud analytics services.

Having all these features inside a single control interface has obvious advantages. It makes it easier for users to move, manage and govern data, increasing productivity and saving time jumping from point product to point product, plus necessitating less training time for users.

Dell Boomi’s API Management covers the entire lifecycle, enabling enterprises to create, publish and centrally manage APIs—on-premises or in the cloud. This makes it easier to create, distribute and govern the range of APIs that organizations increasingly realize as important to accelerate business-to-consumer (B2C), business to business (B2B), and mobile interactions.

Dell Boomi API Management already has more than 650 paying customers, General Manager Chris McNabb told eWEEK. Any legacy SOAP (Simple Object Access Protocol) Web service can be modernized, McNabb said.

“CIOs are moving from using APIs to expose legacy services to internal developers to now dealing with an explosion in integration endpoints—due to social media, mobile devices, proprietary applications, cloud services, Big Data, and Internet of Things—that need to be consumed by potentially thousands of external constituents,” McNabb said. “Organizations must have modern tools to help them rapidly create, publish and manage new APIs and ensure superior quality of service.”

      Dell Boomi API Management includes:

API Design: Enables organizations to create APIs from a set of Web services and aggregate them so they can be centrally managed. API Design also supports fine-grained API versioning, so consumers can control their upgrade timing, ensuring backward compatibility.

API Generate: Enables customers to import legacy SOAP service descriptions and turn them into Web services that can be incorporated into any API and made available to public consumers. This straightforward process helps customers modernize their legacy SOAP services and continue to get value from them in 15 to 30 minutes.
