Responding to the growing demand for real-time data, VoltDB announced Version 5.0 of its in-memory, scale-out operational database.

The new release delivers increased support for the Hadoop ecosystem, expanded SQL support and a new management center. VoltDB 5.0 enables users to more easily create and manage fast data applications. With the Internet of Things driving the need for real time data, an increasing number of organizations are looking to capture and process fast data to create interactive and engaging applications.

Indeed, the growing demand for streaming apps and analytics combined with the increased adoption of Hadoop is driving a need for a platform that can keep up. It is difficult to build fast data applications that simultaneously extract intelligence, do real-time analytics, provide insight and take action in real time on huge volumes of streaming data. VoltDB is an in-memory, scale-out SQL database that is purpose-built to power a new generation of applications that thrive on fast, smart data. And VoltDB 5.0 is designed to simplify the development of fast data applications.

“Our customers’ demand for real-time, intelligent and actionable subscriber insights has never been greater,” said Prateek Kapadia, CTO of Flytxt, in a statement. “With VoltDB, we are able to focus our attention on the discovery, creation and dissemination of subscriber insight, rather than its storage and update mechanisms. With its single integrated platform and rapid data ingestion and export, we remain on the cutting edge and help our customers do the same.”

VoltDB officials said previously the solution for building streaming apps has been to implement the Lambda Architecture using a “DIY” or do-it-yourself solution made up of separate open source components. However, this often leads to unnecessary complexity, performance overhead and technical risk. VoltDB’s purpose-built database platform delivers the performance, scale and capability to ingest, analyze and make decisions on fast, streaming data in real time.

New features and enhancements in VoltDB 5.0 include expanded Hadoop ecosystem support and new export connectors such as HDFS export, HTTP export, Kafka export and RabbitMQ export. It also features support for exporting data in Avro format and includes a Kafka loader as a new data import option. There also are three new bulk data import options: JDBC Loader, Hadoop OutputFormat and Vertica UDx. In addition, VoltDB 5.0 features a new browser-based VoltDB Management Center for one-stop database monitoring and configuration management.

“Developers are in need of better tools with which to develop fast data streaming applications with real-time analytics and decision making across industries,” said Bruce Reading, president and CEO of VoltDB, in a statement. “As the popularity and adoption for Hadoop continues to surge, there is an increased need for integration between fast and big data so developers can focus on the applications and not the infrastructure. Version 5.0 meets that demand.”

Myfox, a home security system provider, uses VoltDB for processing fast data. The company selected VoltDB to perform real-time analysis of the data collected through the Myfox Security System and Myfox Security Camera. Myfox is using VoltDB to improve the effectiveness of home security systems and help deter home invasions.

“With all the technology available, it is time to move beyond the conventional security system to make home security live up to its promise of keeping people’s homes safe,” said Myfox CEO Jean-Marc Prunet, in a statement. “Myfox chose VoltDB because it is a scalable, high-performance tool for real-time decision making in a sensitive market. VoltDB’s ability to analyze data streaming in from the system’s sensors in real time ensures accuracy and puts security back into the user’s hands.”
