      Jan. 28 is National Data Privacy Day, and CyberTECH, one of the nation’s leading cyber-security and IoT-based ecosystem networks, is staging a daylong seminar on the impact the Internet of things (IoT) is having on individual and corporate privacy.

      The Data Privacy Day 2015 event is being held at the San Diego Gas & Electric Energy Innovation Center in San Diego, Calif.

      Co-sponsors of the seminar include Securing Our eCity, a recognized cyber-security awareness and education Foundation; nationally recognized identity-theft awareness organization, Identity Theft Resource Center; and the nation’s most distinguished privacy think tank research institution, the Ponemon Institute. The invitation-only event features some of the top names in the security industry from around the country.

      The day starts with a roundtable discussion led by Chris Preimesberger, editor of features and analysis at eWEEK, who has moderated a number of panels previously for organizations such as CyberTECH, RSA Security, VMware and others. Panel members will include Ryan Gillis, director of legislative affairs and cyber-security policy of the National Security Council Staff at The White House; Larry Ponemon, founder of the Ponemon Institute; Darin Anderson, founder and chairman of CyberTECH; Ozzie Diaz, strategic planning director at Intel Corp.; and several other industry experts.

      Immediately following the roundtable, there will be three keynote addresses, including:

      • Caroline Winn of San Diego Gas & Electric, who has been an activist and leader in utility security and privacy concerns;
      • Mark Weatherford, Chertoff Group; and
      • Peter Evans, Center for Global Enterprise.

      “We are at a critical juncture where the concerns around The Internet of things can be addressed before the tidal wave of products built around it are actually brought to market,” Andersen said. “Issues of security and privacy need immediate attention if consumers, government, schools and corporations are going to get ahead of these problems and assure themselves protection.

      “We not only want this day to be interactive, we want to generate some intriguing and potentially actionable ideas. So we worked with Larry Ponemon of the Ponemon Institute to design an exercise much like one his think tank might go through.”

      A second panel, on “Security, Privacy and Trust in IoT Platforms,” will be moderated by Cleve Adams, CEO of security firm AirPatrol. It will include panelists from the Department of Defense, Cisco, Xerox, Ntrepid and Independent Security Evaluators.

      For more information and to see the results of the seminar, go here. eWEEK will cover the event in detail.
