MobileIron Adds iOS Capabilities to EMM Platform

Security and device management specialist MobileIron announced additional Enterprise Mobility Management (EMM) capabilities to its portfolio, including integrations with Splunk software to support threat detection, problem resolution and strategic decision-making.

The company’s Help@Work platform provides a way for employees to share Apple iOS device screens with help desk personnel, while Tunnel delivers per app virtual private networks (VPN) on iOS without wrapping or a software development kit (SDK).

Tunnel delivers an end-to-end solution for per app VPN on iOS to secure data-in-motion from almost any managed App Store app, and allows organizations to authorize both internally built apps and App Store apps to access corporate resources behind the firewall.

Unapproved and personal apps are blocked from using Tunnel, and its ability to proxy Kerberos allows iOS 7 single sign-on (SSO) to be used with devices that are not on the corporate network, without needing to expose the Kerberos Key Distribution Center (KDC).

The integration with Splunk software includes the embedding of Splunk software into the MobileIron platform and the release of the MobileIron App for Splunk Enterprise.

Available on the Splunk Apps Website, the app works in tandem with the Splunk software embedded on MobileIron’s EMM platform to provide prebuilt visualizations about an organization’s mobile IT machine data and generate graphs, reports, alerts and dashboards.

Splunk software can extract more than 200 machine data fields per mobile device that describe an organization’s mobile environment and provide comprehensive system health data.

This data is then collected by Splunk Enterprise, where the mobile machine data can be correlated with other IT data and analyzed in Splunk Enterprise or with the application.

“Mobility unlocks human potential in the workplace and helps our customers establish competitive advantage,” Sean Convery, vice president of product management at MobileIron, said in a statement. “But as a company’s mobile deployment expands, the operational burden on IT can become overwhelming without the right management platform.”

Help@Work is a customizable iOS app that allows screen-sharing sessions to display the entire device to help desk staff, but are initiated and confirmed by the user to help ensure privacy.

Sharing sessions can take place over the wide area network (WAN), WiFi and cellular networks, and inside and outside the network. Employees tap to request help, connect with their help desk and tap to begin a screen-sharing session.

Businesses can customize Help@Work with text and logo updates or change the look and feel of the end-to-end employee experience. To help recue the need for specialized user interface (UI) knowledge, customization is done through HTML.
