Technology giant Hewlett-Packard (HP) expanded its health care portfolio at the 2014 HIMSS Conference & Exhibition with solutions designed to help health care providers improve workflow, enhance patient and caregiver experience, and reduce compliance risk.

Those products and services include tablets and PCs that provide access to electronic medical records, thin client and print solutions to improve workflow, and workstations designed for health care environments.

HP Access Control and HP Security Center are two examples of solutions from HP’s portfolio of hardware, software and service offerings for evaluating and implementing solutions to protect confidential information, avoid noncompliance costs and enhance device security.

At every stage of the patient experience, security is a major concern for health care providers—more than 90 percent of organizations in a recent survey had at least one security breach in the last two years, according to a recent study from the Ponemon Institute.

“Health care providers crave help from trusted advisers to embrace technology that improves and optimizes the care continuum,” Kevin Murphy, vice president of strategy and business enablement for printing and personal systems at HP, said in a statement. “As a strategic technology partner, HP works with health care providers step by step to realize organizational and technology-enabled change.”

HP Digital Signage with multitouch screens powering software from Four Winds Interactive helps hospitals to implement self-check-in and keep patients engaged with interactive content in the waiting room, while the Slate Pro 21 and ElitePad with Retail Jacket provide quicker access to information, giving patients and administrators a more versatile experience.

In addition, an ElitePad with an optional Security Jacket and software from Imprivata uses an integrated smart card and fingerprint reader to simplify login and prevent unauthorized access to important patient data.

“HP shares our vision for a safer, higher-quality and lower-cost health care system,” John Vozenitek, emergency medicine physician and chief medical officer at the Jump Trading Simulation and Education Center, said in a statement. “HP has the tools that we need to make those impacts on patient care.”

In an effort to enhance the patient’s experience at the point of care, HP offers additional digital signage solutions, and the company’s ElitePad using the Oneview Healthcare Solution gives physicians and nurses interactive access to information and clinical applications.

In addition, HP Z Display on Humanscale Healthcare’s mobile cart on wheels provides physicians with access to information at the patient bedside, while HP Access Control and secure printing from Troy Healthcare Solutions on the LaserJet Enterprise flow multifunction printer (MFP) help reduce risk and boost performance for health care providers printing a high volume of sensitive information.

“Technology intersecting with the continuum of care is what we do,” Nicole Steenrod, critical care clinical education scholar at OSF Saint Francis Medical Center, said in a statement. “HP technology helps to make collaboration easier.”
