Data storage solutions specialist STORServer announced that it is offering backup appliances built on CommVault Simpana 10 data and information management software.

The company’s Backup Appliance line is a family of purpose-built backup appliances designed for small and midsize businesses (SMBs) and is composed of integrated hardware and software components.

The CommVault appliances are currently available as options in the current STORServer product lines. The CommVault BA600 model is sized for IT shops, corporate departments or branch offices with 1-5 terabytes (TBs) of data.

Appliances are also available in three of the enterprise backup appliance models (EBA800, EBA1200 and EBA2200) and are aimed at customers with up to 1PB (petabyte) of data to protect.

Prices for the appliances begin at less than $10,000 with the addition of software offered in both capacity and client/application-based license options.

STORServer will also extend its reseller network and support services to provide point of sale and maintenance support for CommVault customers.

“We’re excited to offer our customers the world’s best data backup appliance built on the industry’s leading software platforms for data protection,” Bill Smoldt, president of STORServer, said in a statement. “We made the decision to expand our product offering because CommVault has taken a leadership role in the data protection industry, and it is in our customers’ best interest to support the Simpana software. CommVault’s growing market share comes as a natural fit for STORServer as we reach further into the enterprise.”

The launch of the STORServer Backup Appliance, powered by CommVault, marks the first time the company has offered an enterprise data protection software engine other than IBM Tivoli Storage Manager (TSM).

“The key to unlocking value from business data begins with having an easy way to instantly protect, recover and access current and historical information,” David West, senior vice president of worldwide marketing and business development for CommVault, said in a statement. “Forward-thinking organizations now have more options to manage data differently with the integration of the Simpana software platform with STORServer’s amazingly simple to deploy backup appliance.”

In August, STORServer launched its online Appliance Wizard, which helps data protection shoppers determine which STORServer appliance solution and associated products and services best fit their backup environment and business goals.

The Appliance Wizard takes backup shoppers through a series of questions about their data environment. Once all questions are answered, the tool automatically shares the results of the brief survey, including the amount of data the client needs to back up and the appropriate-sized solution for the environment.

The wizard can also advise buyers what’s needed to comply with federal regulations, such as SOX and HIPPA, disaster recovery needs, necessary backup for virtual machines and storage area networks and budget requirements.
