Western Digital subsidiary WD has redesigned its My Book and My Book for Mac lines of external desktop drives to provide as much as 4TB storage capacity and enhanced data protection for users that create and collect large volumes of data.
Available in 2TB and 3TB capacities, My Book for Mac is compatible with Apple’s Time Machine for the backup of files, and the device will also incorporate SuperSpeed USB 3.0 and UAS connectivity. The drive is also equipped with WD Security software for password protection and hardware encryption to protect files from unauthorized access, and comes with WD Utilities, which allows users to register drives, run diagnostics and more.
With USB 3.0 for enhanced speed, the new My Book lines are available in 2TB, 3TB and 4TB capacities. The two editions of hard drives are protected by a three-year limited warranty and is available from the WD store as well as select retailers and distributors. The suggested retail price for the drives will be $129.99 for the 2TB versions, $149.99 for the 3TB versions and $179.99 for the 4TB versions.
For full system backup and secure deletion of files, My Book includes Acronis True Image (ATI) WD Edition, an integrated software suite that ensures security of all information on the PC and can be used to securely delete any confidential data no longer needed. The platform is also used for disaster recovery in case of a fatal system crash, recovering the entire PC including files, software and preferences.
In addition, WD SmartWare Pro automatic backup software with hardware encryption and password protection prevents unauthorized access to the drive, and to further protect files against theft, fire, flood or other natural disaster, My Book integrates with the Dropbox file service to store files in the cloud.
“The new generation of My Book external hard drives provides greater speed, flexibility, content safety, and system security for our customers,” Scott Steffens, general manager of WD’s consumer storage products group, said in a statement. “Consumers are creating, downloading and storing more digital content than ever before and our line of desktop drives is equipped with capacities and security measures to keep it all backed up and protected against system disaster, damage or theft.”
Earlier this month, the company announced the expansion of its Red NAS line of SATA hard drives specifically designed for home and small-office network-attached storage systems with between one and five drive bays. Powered by NASware 2.0 technology, the drives offer improvement in reliability and protection of customer data in the event of a power loss or disruption. They also feature 3D Active Balance Plus, an enhanced balance control technology, which is designed to improve overall drive performance and reliability.
