Nuxeo, a provider of open-source enterprise content management (ECM) software, has announced it is contributing its Java Content Repository technology (Nuxeo Core) to the Eclipse Foundation.

The “Eclipse Enterprise Content Repository” project, or ECR, if approved, will build on the initial contribution to deliver a modular, versatile and full-featured Content Repository technology, leveraging Content Management Interoperability Services (CMIS) as the main access protocol and API, Nuxeo officials said.

“We have decided to spin off this project from our company to ignite innovation in the content management space,” said Eric Barroca, CEO of Nuxeo, in a statement. “The content repository is the core technology of any application managing structured or unstructured business content. Too often developers implement ad-hoc repositories on top of bare SQL databases. We are taking the opportunity presented by CMIS to offer a great technology and hope it will foster innovation in our space.

“We approached Eclipse because it has the infrastructure, broad developer community and proven processes to be able to accept and accelerate a project of the scope of the Enterprise Content Repository project. Eclipse-related technology such as Equinox and OSGI are fundamental to the Nuxeo Enterprise Platform architecture, inspiring its modular, extensible framework.”

Moreover, Nuxeo officials said the emergence of standardized content repository services signals a maturing content management technology market. Nuxeo is proposing its contribution to Eclipse to accelerate adoption of content management technology, expand the developer community and create an open-source reference implementation for a content repository compliant with the CMIS. With ECR, developers and architects of content management applications will not have to reimplement commonly used CMS functionality.

“We are very excited to have Nuxeo lead a new Eclipse project for enterprise content management,” said Mike Milinkovich, executive director of the Eclipse Foundation, in a statement. “Nuxeo is a well respected provider of enterprise content management solutions, so I am confident their contribution and leadership will accelerate the success of this project. This project also extends the portfolio of Eclipse runtime technology, making it easier to build enterprise systems based on Equinox and OSGi.”

The ECR project will provide developers with a reference implementation for content repositories, and enable them to more easily build content applications such as document management, records management, digital asset management, case management, or any vertical or horizontal composite content application to address specific business challenges.

The scope for ECR includes APIs (Java, REST), content management interoperability support via CMIS, and a wide range of content repository services. Nuxeo encourages additional participation from both the Eclipse and Nuxeo communities via the
