Verizon Wireless said it has started rolling out Google’s Android 2.2 operating system for the HTC Droid Incredible, one of the more popular Android devices the No. 1 wireless carrier sells.

Verizon made the official announcement about the Froyo upgrade on its Twitter @VZWSupport account Aug. 27. See this Verizon support Web page here.

Upgrades will come over the air in batches, meaning some people will be prompted immediately to upgrade, while others must wait days or weeks, according to the Android Power blog, which broke the news.

The carrier launched the Droid Incredible April 29 for $199 with a $100 mail-in rebate and a two-year contract.

The handset, which originally launched with Android 2.1, runs the 1GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon. The gadget has a 3.7-inch WVGA (480-by-800) AMOLED capacitive touch screen.

The Incredible, like the Motorola Droid X and HTC Evo 4G from Sprint, has proved so popular that it is often sold out or on back order.

The Incredible joins the Google Nexus One, HTC Evo 4G, Motorola Droid and Droid 2 as Android smartphones that run the latest OS.

Android 2.2 includes a faster browser, support for Adobe Flash 10.1 and Microsoft Exchange, and a cloud-to-device messaging API that enables such applications as the Google Chrome to Phone service.

Verizon and Motorola have said the Motorola Droid X will be the next device to get the Android 2.2 in September.

Indeed, Motorola last week published an upgrade timeline listing when users of its Android smartphones can expect an OS upgrade. View the timeline here.
