Open source private and public cloud computing software developer Cloud.com announced that its platform CloudStack now supports VMware vSphere 4.1 and VMware vCenter Server. The company said this new support enables enterprises and service providers who have already standardized on VMware virtualization technologies to extend their capabilities into the cloud without requiring changes to their existing infrastructure or virtualization management tools.
“We are pleased to see Cloud.com add support for VMware vSphere,” said Jian Zhen, director, cloud computing solutions for VMware. “Cloud.com’s support underscores customer demand for developing cloud strategies on the industry’s only enterprise-class virtual infrastructure. Cloud.com’s customers can now choose to deploy their cloud infrastructure on the leading virtualization and cloud platform.”
Through the implementation of common cloud frameworks, Cloud.com provides an open environment that interoperates with a user’s existing cloud initiatives. Cloud.com delivers all of the components used to build, deploy and manage multitier and multitenant cloud applications in a user-friendly software package. CloudStack is designed to integrate with existing data center infrastructure without modification, special-purpose hardware or reconfiguration
“Since introducing CloudStack in May, we have seen incredible demand for our product on all hypervisors, so adding support for VMware vSphere and VMware vCenter allows us to support a large population of virtualization users with a diverse set of deployments and use cases,” said Sheng Liang, CEO and founder at Cloud.com. “By supporting VMware vSphere, we are enabling customers to extend their virtualized environments to the cloud while enabling them to continue using tools that are already familiar to them. We expect this to greatly accelerate the time to market and the ROI that users experience with the cloud.”
The integrated software solution for delivering infrastructure as a service (IaaS) comes in three products: CloudStack Enterprise Edition, CloudStack Service Provider Edition and CloudStack Community Edition. The Community Edition solution is distributed under the General Public License 3 (GPL3). The company said it would be demonstrating CloudStack on VMware vSphere at VMworld 2010, taking place Aug. 30 through Sept. 2 at the Moscone Center in San Francisco.
“Cloud.com’s CloudStack combined with VMware vSphere enables us to build out reliable, elastic cloud computing solutions by using technologies that offer the best of both worlds – a leading open source cloud computing environment, running on the industry’s most advanced virtualization and cloud platform,” said Jason Baker, CTO at hosting and connectivity provider Visi. “With the addition of VMware vSphere as a supported platform for CloudStack, there is a significant reduction in complexity and risk to deploying a cloud service since we can do it with technologies and tools we already use.”
