Websense Offers Data Loss Prevention Suite for Download

Websense is taking a new approach to its data loss prevention (DLP) story, opting to make a full version of its product suite available to customers via download.

The complexity of implementing DLP has slowed adoption of the technology in the past, and experts say proper planning upfront can be the difference between easy deployments and administrative headaches. To address the challenges around installation and deployment, Websense is offering “DLP for Download” to give organizations a chance to install and evaluate the technology with less difficulty.

“Most DLP solutions take weeks, if not months, to deploy, and then there’s still the requirement to get it operational,” explained David Meizlik, Director of Product Marketing at Websense. “By streamlining our solution so it can be easily downloaded and installed in under an hour, we’re radically reducing the cost and complexity to assess risk, identify need and evaluate DLP technology.”

To that end, the company is allowing customers to use the download for free for 30 days.

The suite is managed by the Websense TRITON console, which integrates reporting and managing from the DLP solution with Websense’s Web Security Gateway products. The suite, Meizlik said, secures data at rest, in use, and in motion, and can perform passive monitoring or active enforcement ranging from notifications to blocking.

“For discovery, it can scan an enterprise both from the network and endpoint layer and report on and remediate sensitive data stored inappropriately and at risk of being lost,” he said. “It can monitor and enforce on network channels and at the client – both on and off network, including HTTP, HTTPS, FTP, IM, USB, Copy, Paste, Print, Print Screen, and more.”

The download is supported by an online portal that includes step-by-step video instructions to deploying and setting policies, as well as a policy template and best practice guide. The initial license enables monitoring of Web and e-mail channels for up to 500 employees. After the free trial period, the price goes up to $17.50 per employee.
