Quantum has long been known for disk storage, tape archiving and a solid deduplication feature. Now the company is going deeper into the data backup segment. On Oct. 21, it launched a new line of NAS backup appliances for midranges and SMBs that essentially are turnkey storage machines for non-IT types.
The new DXi6500 lineup is a pure KISS [Keep It Simple, Stupid] play: It includes ready-to-go advanced data deduplication capability, can be set up in minutes via a wizard interface, and keeps capital expense costs reasonable by offering all necessary licensed software in pre-configured bundles.
The new appliances come in five preconfigured models with 3TB-to-30TB capacities for primary data. Each one offers a simple NAS interface, with built-in deduplication and a common replication format with the rest of Quantum’s DXi-Series.
All models are designed to be installable by the end user or reseller, and even larger models can scale easily by adding capacity on site with no need for a service visit. Also, all five DXi6500s support integration with top-flight backup software packages, including NetBackup via Symantec’s OpenStorage API.
Finally, every DXi6500 unit includes Quantum’s esXpress software for VMware environments.
“Mid-sized companies have been holding back on implementing deduplication due to the perceived complexity of implementing it and concerns about cost,” said Lauren Whitehouse, senior analyst at Enterprise Storage Group. “Quantum’s bundled approach with the DXi6500 family manages to minimize the risks of adoption while delivering deduplication with compelling value.”
