Online backup and storage service provider Pro Softnet announced the availability of their Long Term Archiving solution via customized snapshots technology. While IBackup has previously offered snapshots technology to enable historical view of backup data for the past few days, this view has been limited to 10 days, or in some customized enterprise accounts, up to 30 days. With the improved LTA technology for snapshots, IBackup now offers a historical view that can go back to multiple years.
The company argues LTA solutions are expensive and available to only enterprise customers who can opt for proprietary storage systems from larger companies such as IBM and EMC, among others, to run either within their enterprises or at data centers. IBackup said it is hoping to enable similar functionality at a lower cost for budget-conscious midmarket businesses. The additional storage requirements for Snapshots have no impact on a company’s account storage space. IBackup Professional, the company’s enterprise-level product, offers AES 256-bit encryption of data on storage and retains up to 30 versions of data online.
Snapshots are “read only” copies of data that aid in historical views of data at a point in time. IBackup’s LTA solution spans multiple platforms; it is available for Windows, Mac and Linux. The “Show Snapshots” option lets users view files that have been stored in the IBackup account recently, under newly created directories, with appropriate names “We can now offer customized long-term snapshots for retrieval which can span even multiple years,” said Pro Softnet’s infrastructure manager K. Bhatia.
Raghu Kulkarni, president and CEO of Pro Softnet, said the company continues to innovate and bring enterprise quality offerings to SMB market at affordable prices. Kulkarni pointed out IBackup’s Exchange, SQL Server and Oracle hot backup capability, as well as “rapid serve,” a shipped device plus online backup combination for faster initial backups and restores. “With IBackup, we offer fast online backup and restore choices with various levels of optimization,” he said. “We offer true hot sites disaster recovery solution where one can create a full replica of primary data at a secondary location, something that only large enterprises could afford.
Recently Sun Microsystems also expanded its portfolio of storage solutions to target SMBs. Earlier this year the technology giant introduced an Open Archive solution that pairs the Sun Storage 7110 and 7210 Unified Storage Systems and Sun Fire X4140 and Sun Fire X4240 servers with Symantec Enterprise Vault 8 software. Sun claims the solution can reduce storage costs cost by up to 90 percent and reduce production and backup storage needs by up to 80 percent.
