Sonic Solutions announced May 7 that it has formed a licensing agreement with Research in Motion, developer of BlackBerry devices, to provide users with Roxio Media Manager software for BlackBerry, enabling users to manage and transfer their photos, videos, music and other media files between their computer and smartphone.

Roxio Media Manager, which will be available to BlackBerry Pearl and BlackBerry 8800 series smartphone users, features a user interface that allows content to move between a computer and the smartphones internal or expandable memory storage. It enables users to search for media files on their computer; view and organize them; create MP3 music files from CDs; add audio tags; create playlists that enable a song to be used across several playlists without duplicating the file on the handset; and convert pictures, music and videos for playback on the BlackBerry Curve.

“The customized Roxio Media Manager application is a powerful complement to other BlackBerry smartphone features,” Mark Gilbert, vice president of Corporate Marketing at the Waterloo, Ontario-based Research in Motion, said in a company statement. “It enhances the overall mobile experience and makes it easy for users to organize, synchronize and access their music, videos and photos on the new BlackBerry Curve.”

The media platform from Sonic includes an AutoMix feature, which allows users to create playlists of complementary songs based on a single song selected by the user while also featuring Roxio PhotoSuite 9 LE, a tool that enables users to edit pictures and create photo albums.

Using PhotoSuite application, BlackBerry users are also able to crop, rotate and straighten photos while also allowing users to fix flaws by removing red eye or changing the brightness, contrast and saturation levels. Users are also able to improve their photos with color filters and special effects.

“Our agreement with RIM is a solid endorsement of our technology and enables an ideal alliance for Sonic to advance in the mobile media space,” Dave Habiger, president and CEO of the Novato, Calif.-based Sonic Solutions, said in a separate company statement.

Pricing information on the agreement was not released.
