    Iomega, Symantec Team on Data Protection for SMBs

      Iomega announced Nov. 30 that Symantecs Backup Exec 11d for Windows Servers will natively support Iomegas REV backup drives.

      Designed for small and medium-sized businesses, Backup Exec 11d will provide businesses with high-performance, certified disk-to-disk tape backup and recovery while also extending its data protection capabilities to Microsoft Exchange.

      The data protection software includes Granular Recovery Technology, which enables SMBs to retrieve important data from Microsoft applications such as Exchange, SharePoint and Active Directory.

      Backup Exec 11d will also deliver improved data security to SMBs with 128-bit and 256-bit AES (advanced encryption standard) encryption capabilities as well as platform support with Backup Exec media servers that work with x64-bit Windows servers.

      “Because REV technology combines the performance advantages of disk-base storage with the removability of tape, our customers can use REV to leverage the full potential of Backup Exec 11d for Windows Servers,” Pat Hanavan, vice president of product management for Symantec, said in a company release.

      Iomegas REV backup drives feature removable hard drive technology that was created to replace tape products and other technologies used by SMBs for backup of critical data.

      “We have worked hard with the vendors of backup software to make the REV platform a seamless storage option thats compatible with all the leading small business backup software products,” Tom Kampfer, president and chief operating officer of Iomega, said in the same release.

      REV drives allow SMBs to access and store important data while also providing security to businesses through disk password protection.

      Kampfer believes that Iomega and Symantec are a good fit and that SMBs can benefit from using REV technology.

      “Were delighted with Symantecs decision to include native REV support in its latest software release,” Kampfer said. “Now users of Backup Exec have a clear upgrade path from tape storage to the superior hard drive-based speed, usability and reliability of REV technology.”

      Iomega Rev products are available from a large base of VARs, systems integrators and others that work directly with SMBs on their storage and data protection needs.
