IONA Technologies and ObjectWeb Thursday announced that its Celtix open-source ESB (Enterprise Service Bus) project has achieved its third key milestone.

The new milestone brings additional transport support, broader specification compliance and enhanced usability to the project, company officials said.

IONA is headquartered in Dublin, Ireland, with U.S. headquarters in Waltham, Mass. ObjectWeb is a France-based consortium of vendors looking to build next-generation open-source middleware.

Milestone 3 of Celtix includes the completed implementation of HTTP 1.1 and Servlet Transport support, incorporation of SOAP 1.1 headers and additional support for WS-Addressing and JAX-WS (Java API for XML Web Services), IONA officials said.

And in the area of Celtix usability, command line tools for WSDL (Web Services Description Language)-to-Java and Java-to-WSDL have been added and the Celtix configuration infrastructure is complete, the company said.

“With the delivery of Milestone 3, the Celtix project compares favorably with available commercial ESBs,” said Carl Trieloff, director, Open Source Programs, IONA, in a statement.

“The Celtix community has delivered robust JMS support and this, combined with the other features made available in Milestone 3, gives end-users a powerful, and cost-effective, ESB to support their Service Oriented Architecture and other integration projects.”

Milestone 3 also provides a multiple licensing approach that supports both the GNU LGPL (Lesser General Public License) and the EPL (Eclipse Public License) and creates greater opportunities for open-source communities such as the Apache Foundation and the Eclipse Foundation to take dependencies on Celtix code for their ESBs as part of ongoing open-source projects, IONA officials said.

“This Celtix milestone is a significant step toward providing an industry-grade set of ESB components at ObjectWeb,” said Christophe Ney, Executive Director of the ObjectWeb Consortium, in a statement.

“The innovative LGPL/EPL licensing model of this project should help foster reuse of Celtix by a number players in this domain.”
