Today’s topics include Apple’s first iOS and OSX security updates for 2016, Intel’s latest generation of Core vPro processors, Microsoft’s preview of a Windows 10-powered POS System and Juniper’s Mesa 2 tablet.

Apple released its first security updates of 2016 on Jan. 19, with the debut of OS X 10.11.3 and iOS 9.2.1. The updates patch multiple vulnerability classes that could potentially enable attackers to exploit users and their devices.

Among the problems fixed in OS X and iOS is CVE-2016-1722, a vulnerability in the syslog function that was discovered by security researchers Joshua Drake and Nikias Bassen of Zimperium zLabs The flaw could have potentially led to remote code execution or a denial-of-service attack.

On Jan 19, Intel announced general availability of its sixth-generation Intel Core vPro processor lineup. It also previewed a new security feature baked into the silicon that it calls Intel Authenticate, which will be made available immediately to enable businesses to begin internal testing and system qualification.

Intel Authenticate is the company’s first hardware-enhanced, multi-factor authentication system that strengthens identity protection on the PC, making it less vulnerable to identity and security credential attacks.

At this week’s National Retail Federation Big Show conference in New York City, Microsoft is showing off a Windows 10 point-of-sale (POS) system aimed at providing more engaging customer experiences at brick-and-mortar shops.

According to Jeremy Korst, general manager of Windows Product Marketing at Microsoft, the new Windows 10 POS solution will transform traditional, stationary workstations into interactive mobile experiences.

According to Korst, the Windows 10 mobile workstation offers a more secure and automatic log-in with Windows Hello, which unlocks the Windows device by recognizing the retail associate’s face.

Juniper Systems, a provider of rugged field data collection devices, announced the release of its latest handheld product, the Mesa 2 rugged tablet.

The Mesa 2 boasts the largest display produced by the company to date, and the tablet is also Juniper Systems’ first handheld to run Windows 10.

It’s designed to perform reliably in harsh environments and is the only available rugged Windows tablet with an IP68 rating for water and dust resistance.
