Dell CEO Michael Dell, during a tour of Japan last month to promote the companys Simplify IT initiative, brokered the idea that the OEM might be ready to grow through a series of acquisitions, a sharp departure from its past reluctance to buy other companies. The Station has been kind of out of the loop this week, so we beg your indulgence. Our goal is to have at least one item per day, and we’ll try to stick to it from now on. Meanwhile, we’ve been working on some special projects that have required quite a bit of research and […]

Dell’s $1.4 billion purchase of iSCSI storage systems maker EqualLogic-the largest acquisition in company history and one of the largest in the data storage genre, period-shocked more than a few people. But perhaps the most important shockee, however, was EMC-one of Dell’s most strategic systems partners. Certainly key people within EMC, the world’s largest storage […]

Autonomic computing is a self-management mechanism for a system or systems. Autonomic IT systems can make pre-programmed “decisions” […]

Chip maker Intel actually has been making small storage-type systems for about three years, but few people knew about it because none of the products were Intel-branded. They’ve all been sent to […]

Cisco Systems Nov. 6 launched a revamp of its venerable Catalyst 6500 and 4500 LAN switches to better support peer-to-peer and real-time applications—without actually rearchitecting the products. Cisco added new virtualization capabilities to its Catalyst 6500 that allow customers to get a performance boost without having to “rip and replace” the chassis switch. At the […]

Dell’s announcement that it is investing a whopping $1.4 billion in cash to acquire EqualLogic is one of the more noteworthy storage news items in the last 12 months. EqualLogic is the largest independent iSCSI storage array maker, trailing only the big companies that also do many other things: EMC, NetAPP, Hewlett-Packard, Sun Microsystems, IBM, […]

IBM is launching an industry-first initiative to help its customers benchmark and verify how efficient they are before and after embarking on data center energy-efficiency projects. The initiative, unveiled Nov. 2, enables companies to earn efficiency certificates for reducing the energy needed to run their data centers. The certificates—based on energy-use reduction verified by a […]
