Storage Station

A bird's eye view of the data storage industry.

Facebook About to Make Some Big Investments

The Station has heard from a couple of sources inside the industry that Facebook, which recently overtook in number of subscribers, is planning to move off leased, co-located data centers and build its own fleet of data farms.

Mark Zuckerberg & Co. will be looking to use the latest, greatest and greenest data center components available on the market.

What does this mean? Well, um, let me see ... a few zillion dollars waiting to be spent on either leasing or buying land for the server farms, all new servers, all new storage, all new security, all new everything ...

Starting from scratch in the Web 2.0 business is an amazingly challenging task. Google's been there and done that ... When Facebook gets going, it'll only be about 37 data centers behind Google.

So, what are you vendors waiting for? Here's its contact info: 156 University Avenue, Palo Alto, Calif. 94301; main phone: (650) 853-1300.
