Imation Comes Up With Its Own Secure Data Architecture

The software enables individual users to manage their own business-related files while supporting an organization's control and management policies.

Imation, which continues to evolve far beyond its legacy tape storage business, this week unveiled a Secure Data Movement Architecture to give enterprises a holistic approach to managing high-value data files throughout the lifecycle.

The SDMA software -- developed by Imation's Nexsan storage software arm -- enables individual users to manage their own business-related files while also adhering to an organization's control and management policies.

High-value data is defined as an organization's critical content that must be safeguarded from tampering, loss or corruption.

Data files created by users, devices and sensors are being copied across multiple device types, including personal devices such as tablets and smart phones. Business data and personal files are, in fact, mixed into all of it. Imation believes that there haven't been any truly holistic approaches to separating or protecting all of it until now.

Traditionally, applications have provided sufficient protection for the structured data stored within an organization's IT environment; however with the tremendous growth of unstructured data that is often accessed by client applications, this data has become vulnerable, because it may unintentionally escape organizational control or be accessed, tampered with or stolen.

SDMA safeguards high-value data from hand to cloud and creation to destruction, Imation said. Using clearly- set policies in a cloud service, it safeguards files for archiving, remote workers, file-sharing and collaboration, storage management and cloud and mobile devices.

SDMA is an amalgamation of components in Imation's Nexsan Assureon Secure Archive, IronKey Secure Storage and IronKey Workspace with Windows To Go software products that are in use today. Assureon provides a secure archive; IronKey mobile storage enables users to securely access their workspaces and files remotely while adhering to corporate IT standards. IronKey Workspace with Windows To Go is a USB stick that equips employees and contractors with a portable Windows 8.1 corporate image.

Imation acquired Nexsan two years ago for about $120 million. The IP is added as a result has helped the Minnesota-based storage company move into new markets and grow internationally.
