A couple of hot “disruptive” data storage companies — whose technologies are revolutionary yet complementary — have joined forces and will commingle their wares.
Moonwalk, an Australian developer of data management and protection software, and U.S.-based Caringo have created a joint, single-tier storage package using Caringo’s CAStor clustered architecture and Moonwalk’s middlewareless data management system.
This combination of second-generation storage technologies gives enterprise and midrange business customers an alternative to expensive proprietary, multitiered CAS (content-addressed storage) systems. The software runs on off-the-shelf storage servers and uses a unique flat file address space, Moonwalk founder and CEO Peter Harvey told The Station.
The CAStor system’s single-tier architecture that treats all disks in a cluster as primary storage while delivering all the attributes of an archive. The result is a “massively scalable clustered storage environment with the cost efficiencies of secondary storage, the high performance of primary storage and integrity for compliance archiving,” Harvey said.
Moonwalk’s software sits on any system server and actively migrates, copies and moves data according to user-defined rules and policies based on criteria such as age, size, file type, file name, file creator and many more granular classification rules. It operates across all major file systems, including Windows, Unix, Linux and NetWare, and all primary and secondary storage environments. Its stateless architecture requires no additional overhead and is transparent to users and applications, with no introduced points of potential failure, ensuring maximum performance and availability, Harvey said.
Caringo provides WORM storage, content integrity and authenticity meeting regulatory mandates, such as SEC17a4 and HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act).
Pricing for the combination package is available upon consultation, but it’s generally much less than for most of the more well-known brands. Click here for more information about Caringo or Moonwalk.
