Storage Station

A bird's eye view of the data storage industry.

Rumor Central: Symantec, EMC to Make Big SaaS News?

Yes, that rumor you've been whispering about is indeed true. Symantec will indeed be making a major announcement next month about a new software as a service (SaaS) involving storage. That's all The Station is at liberty to spill at this point, and frankly, that's all we know.

Plus, we hear that storage infrastructure behemoth EMC also will be making an announcement of some kind involving SaaS -- and likely storage. That one apparently is set for Jan. 21 -- which is the Dr. Martin Luther King Day holiday. Maybe they'll rethink it and make the news announcement on Tuesday the 22nd instead; a lot of people will be off work for the federal holiday.

In any case, lots o' news brewing as the new year gets warmed up, and we aim to be on top of it as it happens.

Some not-so-good news: It's never good to hear about layoffs, even when they involve a competitor. IDG's Network World recently went through a round of layoffs, and two of them included veteran IT journalists Deni Connor and Robert Mullins.

Ms. Connor covered data storage for nine years at Network World and has now started her own analyst firm called Storage Strategies NOW. Mullins has gone into free-lance writing for the time being. We wish good luck to both of them in 2008 -- they're first-class folks
