    Toshiba Launches New Enterprise Notebooks

Toshiba is rolling out new enterprise notebooks for the North American market.

On Oct. 16, Toshiba America Information Systems, the North American subsidiary of Toshiba, will begin offering new models in its Satellite Pro series of notebooks for enterprises and midmarket business customers. These new laptops will ship to customers starting in November.

Toshiba, which is based in Irvine, Calif., is now offering the Satellite Pro A200, which uses Intel microprocessors, and the Satellite Pro A210 laptop, which is based on Advanced Micro Devices chips. In June, Toshiba announced that it would begin selling PCs with AMD processors after exclusively using Intel chips for years.

Jonathan Seckler, a senior product manager for AMD, said the Oct. 16 launch marks the first time Toshiba is offering an AMD-based notebook for enterprise customers. The first Toshiba notebooks with AMD processors were for the consumer market.

“Now, five of the top 10 notebook manufacturers in the world are offering a commercial platform that uses AMD products,” Seckler said.

In the worldwide notebook market, Toshiba has been striving toward creating its own space while looking to take market share from industry leaders such as Hewlett-Packard and Dell. In the second quarter of 2007, research firms IDC and Gartner found that Toshibas North American PC sales increased about 50 percent compared with the previous year and its worldwide sales jumped 20 percent.

Part of the reason for the companys surging sales is price. The base price for the most basic Satellite Pro laptop, for example, is $699, according to Toshiba.

With its latest launch, Toshiba is offering several configurations for both its AMD- and Intel-based Satellite notebooks.

The Satellite Pro A200 offers Intels Centrino Duo mobile platform, which the chip maker launched earlier this year, although this platform does not use the companys vPro technology.

The Intel-based notebook offers a range of Core 2 Duo processors, including the T7250, which boasts a clock speed of 2.0GHz, 2MB of Level 2 cache and a 800MHz front-side bus. It also offers Intels GM965 Express chip set, 1GB of DDR2 SDRAM (double data rate 2 synchronous dynamic RAM), a SATA (Serial ATA) hard drive with a maximum capacity of 120GB, a 15.4-inch display and support for 802.11 a/b/g wireless LAN technology. The configuration with the Intel Core 2 Duo T7250 processor starts at $999, according to Toshiba.

The Satellite Pro A210 offers several dual-core Turion 64 X2 processors, including the TL-60, with a clock speed of 2.0GHz, 1MB of L2 cache and the chip makers own HyperTransport technology—a high-speed, chip-to-chip interconnect that runs at 1,600MHz. The laptop also supports the Turion 64 X2 LT-58, which has a clock speed of 1.9GHz.

The A210, which has a 15.4-inch display, also offers AMDs M690 chip set, an ATI Radeon X1200 graphics card, 2GB of DDR2 SDRAM, a SATA hard drive with a 120GB capacity and support for 802.11 b/g wireless LAN technology. The price for this notebook begins at $899, according to Toshiba.

The Satellite Pro A200 and A210 support both the Microsoft Windows XP and Vista operating systems.
