Network Appliance Inc. is giving users a storage-over-IP connectivity kit, new software updates, and an upgrade to its disk-based backup appliance, officials of the Sunnyvale, Calif. company announced yesterday.

To use the new iSCSI option in the 800- and 900-series of NetApps Filer line, users must download a free software upgrade, and install $1,500 Intel Corp. Pro/1000 T IP server adapters, officials said. “If you can set up a simple FTP server, you can set up iSCSI services,” said Keith Brown, director of strategy and technology for Network Appliance.

The IP option is available now. Also available now are numerous management software updates, including SnapVault, which imports data to NetApps NearStore disk-based backup hardware from any other companys storage; MetroCluster, which is remote-site failover software; and Volume Replicator, using Mountain View, Calif.s Veritas Software Corp. technology for remote data replication.

Other software updates available now are SnapDrive 2.1, now with multipath input-output; SnapManager for Lotus Domino, for backup automation, starting at $4,000; and DataFabric 2.2, a storage management tool with new Fibre Channel monitoring and content distribution features, starting at $12,500 for up to 10 storage devices. The Appliance sixth new component, Virtual File Manager 3.0, is a $2,000-per-server rebranded version of Houston-based NuView Inc.s Storage X 3.0, with new features for Linux and Solaris support, automatic failover, and policy management.

SnapVault and MetroCluster pricing were not yet available; SnapDrive is bundled with NetApp storage-area networks. NetApp also launched NearStore R150, a 24TB disk backup appliance, holding up to 255 snapshots, versus just 31 snapshots in the prior R100 version. It costs $250,000 for the full capacity.

Also in network-attached storage news, Snap Appliance Inc. today announced new capacity and pricing for its Linux-based Snap Server 14000 device. The device now has 2.16TB of raw capacity, for $20,995. Snap, of San Jose, Calif., will continue selling the older 1.44TB version for $15,999. That formerly was priced at $24,900, officials said.
