Google has announced new updates for its Chrome Web browser, Chrome for iOS and Chrome OS stable and beta releases as part of its normal schedule of application updates for users. The regularly scheduled updates repair bugs, improve stability and add new features.
The biggest news in the latest round of updates is the release of the Chrome 33 Web browser for Windows, Mac and Linux, Anthony Laforge of the Google Chrome team wrote in a March 14 post on the Chrome Releases Blog. Chrome 33 has been released to the stable channel, with Version 33.0.1750.152 for Mac and Linux and Version 33.0.1750.154 for Windows, wrote Laforge. The new version corrects several memory corruption and other security issues that were found in previous versions of the application.
Version 33 of Chrome replaces Stable Version 32, which was released to users in January. That release included indicators on the browser tabs so that users can quickly find tabs that may be running audio sound clips, Webcams or Webcasts, which can be distracting. Also included was a different look for Windows 8’s Metro mode, as well as the automatic blocking of malware files.
A new Chrome for Android update was also released as Version 33, Jason Kersey of the Google Chrome team wrote in another March 14 post on the Chrome Releases Blog. The new version 33.0.1750.166 fixes three high-priority bugs that cause memory corruption and other problems in the applications, wrote Kersey.
Also released was a stable channel update for Chrome OS to Version 33.0.1750.152 for all devices, Dharani Govindan of the Google Chrome team wrote in a March 14 post on the Chrome Releases Blog. The latest version fixes several critical and high-priority bugs and exploits involving memory corruption, file persistence and other issues in the application, wrote Govindan.
With the advancement of the new stable channel version of Chrome OS, the beta channel version of Chrome OS is also revised to Version 34 so that it can be placed farther on the development path, Matthew Yuan of the Google Chrome team wrote in a March 13 post on the blog.
The new beta channel Version 34.0.1847.60, which is for all Chrome OS devices except for the Chromebook Pixel, includes bug fixes, security updates and feature enhancements, wrote Yuan.
At the same time, the Chrome Beta for Android release has also been updated to Version 34.0.1847.62, according to a March 13 post by Google’s Kersey. This release contains stability improvements for the beta Chrome Android browser, he wrote.
The Beta channel for the Chrome browser itself has also been updated to Version 34.0.1847.60 for Windows, Mac and Linux, Daniel Xie of the Chrome team wrote in a March 12 post on the blog. The latest beta release includes fixes for a number of crashes and other bugs, he wrote.
Also updated is the Dev channel release for Chrome OS to Version 35.0.1883.2 for all Chrome OS devices, except CR48, according to a March 11 blog post by Google’s Govindan. The new version includes bug fixes, security updates and feature enhancements, he wrote.
In February, Google released a new Chrome 33 browser release for iPads and iPhones, as well as a bevy of related browser and OS releases, eWEEK reported.
In September, the Chrome browser celebrated its fifth birthday. Launched in 2008 as a desktop or laptop application, Chrome today is widely used as a mobile browser on many different devices by users to browse the Web and conduct searches, whether they are at home, at work, traveling or vacationing.
Chrome has had quite a ride since its birth. In June 2012, it surpassed Microsoft’s Internet Explorer as the world’s most used browser for the first time, and it has added many useful features over the years to encourage even more users to adopt it.
