Today: GridGain Systems (in-memory systems and application speed and scalability provider)

Company description: GridGain Systems claims it is revolutionizing real-time data access and processing by offering an in-memory computing platform built on Apache Ignite which addresses the application speed and scalability challenges created by digital transformation. GridGain solutions are used by global enterprises in financial services, software, e-commerce, retail, online business services, healthcare, telecom, transportation and other major sectors.

GridGain delivers unprecedented speed and massive scalability to both legacy and greenfield applications. Deployed on a distributed cluster of commodity servers, GridGain software can reside between the application and data layers (RDBMS, NoSQL and Apache Hadoop), requiring no rip-and-replace of the existing databases, or it can be deployed as an in-memory database. GridGain is the most comprehensive in-memory computing platform for high-volume ACID transactions, real-time analytics, web-scale applications, continuous learning and hybrid transactional/analytical processing (HTAP).

GridGain, a private company founded in 2010, is headquartered in Foster City, Calif., with regional offices in Europe, Asia-Pacific and the CIS. GridGain’s CEO is Abe Kleinfeld. GridGain organizes the In-Memory Computing Summit conferences annually in both North America and Europe as well as worldwide In-Memory Computing Meetups held continuously throughout the year.

Markets: GridGain Systems customers include leading companies in banking, insurance, investment management, other financial services, fintech, software/SaaS, e-commerce, retail, online business services, healthcare, telecom, transportation and logistics, IoT, media and entertainment, hospitality and more.

      • GridGain APAC/China: Hong Kong
      • GridGain CIS: St. Petersburg, Russia

      Product and Services

The GridGain in-memory computing platform, built on the open-source Apache Ignite, provides in-memory speed and massive scalability to existing data-intensive applications without ripping and replacing existing databases or can be deployed as an in-memory database. GridGain claims to provide up to a 1,000X increase in performance for applications built on disk-based databases and can easily be scaled out to thousands of nodes and petabytes of in-memory data.

      Key Features

      • GridGain Community Edition is a source available in-memory computing platform built on Apache Ignite that includes patches and updates not yet released in Ignite plus includes additional features and QA testing to provide high performance, reliability and manageability.
      • GridGain Enterprise Edition, also built on Apache Ignite, includes additional enterprise-grade features and testing that make it easier to deploy, manage and secure in production environments when deploying GridGain as an in-memory data grid.
      • GridGain Ultimate Edition includes all the features found in the GridGain Enterprise Edition plus enterprise-grade backup and recovery features to support deployments of GridGain as an in-memory database.

      Insight and Analysis

Overall take: Users really like the facts that the app is easy to use and that the queries run as fast as they do, thanks to the in-memory framework for disk-based applications. Because it is based on Apache Ignite, it is OS-agnostic and can run on most any platform; it’s also very scalable. The open source roots mean that developments can tweak it as needed.

To Take Under Advisement: On the other side, GridGain can be a bit tricky to set up, so advanced and experienced coders are needed to implement the solution.  Users contend that IT managers need to be sure they have the skills on hand to be able to implement the solution in house.

As any IT manager or CTO should do, check it out thoroughly ahead of time to make sure creating a new grid like this will be beneficial to the enterprise right off the bat. Otherwise, a high learning curve and capital may be required.

List of current customers: ING, Raymond James, American Express, Societe Generale, Finastra, IHS Markit, ServiceNow, Marketo, RingCentral, American Airlines, Agilent, and United Healthcare, to name a few.

Delivery: GridGain software can be deployed on-premises, in private or public clouds, or in hybrid environments. GridGain is available in the AWS, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud Marketplaces and supports Docker and Kubernetes. GridGain is also available as software-as-a-service as the GridGain Cloud.

Pricing: The GridGain Community Edition is a free, source-available, in-memory computing platform that is available on the GridGain Download page. GridGain Enterprise and Ultimate Editions are available with an annual license which is included with GridGain Support. GridGain Support contracts range from $2,500 to $21,000 per year per GridGain Compute Unit. Email [email protected] for detailed support and pricing information.
