SAN FRANCISCO-Amazon Web Services and Oracle have announced that “a wide selection of Oracle enterprise software has been certified to run on the Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2) using Oracle VM virtualization.”
In his keynote address on Sept. 19 at Oracle OpenWorld here, Oracle Chairman and CEO Larry Ellison lauded AWS as getting it right as a cloud platform.
Now, “As a result of running on Oracle VM, Oracle now fully certifies and supports the Oracle E-Business Suite, Oracle’s PeopleSoft Enterprise, Oracle’s Siebel CRM, Oracle Fusion Middleware, Oracle Database and Oracle Linux on Amazon EC2,” the company said in a Sept. 20 news release. “Customers who power their business with Oracle software will now be able to fully leverage the scalability, reliability, security and utility-based pricing model of Amazon Web Services for production workloads with full support from Oracle and Amazon Web Services.”

““Customers may use their existing Oracle licenses on Amazon EC2 at no additional license cost, or they may acquire new licenses from Oracle. AWS and Oracle will deliver Oracle software on Oracle VM with hard partitioning, and Oracle’s standard partitioned processor licensing models apply. Oracle Unbreakable Linux Support is available for Oracle Linux on Amazon EC2 as well.To increase speed and convenience for customers, AWS and Oracle will publish a set of pre-configured Amazon Machine Images (AMIs) based on Oracle VM Templates that customers can quickly deploy on Amazon EC2, helping reduce implementation times from weeks or days to minutes. These AMIs will initially include Oracle Linux, Oracle Database 11gR2, Oracle E-Business Suite, and Oracle Fusion Middleware technologies including Oracle WebLogic Server and Oracle Business Process Management. Future AMIs will include PeopleSoft Enterprise, Siebel CRM, and Oracle’s JD Edwards applications. In addition to minimizing installation and hardware maintenance costs, customers can also take advantage of existing features such as Amazon Elastic Load Balancing, Auto-Scaling, Security Groups, Amazon CloudWatch, Reserved Instance pricing, and many more when deploying Oracle applications on Amazon Web Services.”Oracle offers complete and integrated applications, middleware, databases and virtualization for cloud computing,” said Wim Coekaerts, Senior Vice President of Linux and Virtualization Engineering at Oracle. “By partnering with Amazon Web Services to offer the Oracle stack running on Oracle VM within Amazon EC2, [Oracle makes it so that] our customers can now benefit from a fully certified and supported cloud based offering.””Today’s announcement empowers Oracle customers to run their production workloads while leveraging the benefits of AWS-including the ability to add or shed resources as needed, paying only for resources used and freeing up scarce engineering resources from running technology infrastructure-all without sacrificing operational performance, reliability, or security,” said Charlie Bell, Vice President of Utility Computing Services [at] Amazon Web Services. “We’re pleased to be working with Oracle to increase the options and convenience for enterprises who want to leverage Amazon Web Services.””Advanced Innovations is growing revenue at over 100 percent a year with virtually flat headcount.
