VMTurbo, which makes intelligent workload management software for cloud and virtualized deployments, on May 2 upgraded its main platform for direct integration into the alternative open-source cloud operating system, CloudStack.

VMTurbo Operations Manager 3.1 also integrates directly with the open-standards-based application delivery controller (ADC) infrastructure, which enables it to work with other ADC gateways, such as Citrix NetScaler. It also offers new capabilities to allow customers to manage cloud systems beyond the virtualization layer, VMTurbo Vice President of Marketing Derek Slayton told eWEEK.

Operations Manager 3.1 connects VMTurbo’s application-optimization engine to the gateway to prioritize resources and understand and report on application-performance characteristics as they flow through a front-end cloud infrastructure.

The product enables the automatic sizing up and down of virtual machines and applications based on visibility to response times and transaction load. This improves VMTurbo’s ability to allow organizations to practice preventative management rather than reactive monitoring, Slayton said.

“Many enterprises are struggling to extend the use of virtualization to their business-critical applications; and as a result, they are unable to take advantage of further consolidation savings and increased agility that virtualization provides in these environments,” said Mark Bowker, senior analyst at Enterprise Strategy Group.

“The ability to ensure service levels and resource availability across a shared infrastructure is an absolute requirement for IT organizations to virtualize these business-critical applications.”

Burlington, Mass.-based VMTurbo first launched its platform in August 2010 and now is serving more than 4,000 cloud service providers and enterprises worldwide, including British Telecom, Omnicare and L-3 Communications.

VMTurbo Operations Manager 3.1 is available now, Slayton said.
