IBMs DB2 for Z/OS and Oracles Oracle9i databases took the top spots in Gartners recent MarketScope research note.
Gartner evaluated six databases from four vendors on the criteria of their financial viability and market commitment, alliances and ISV support, good references, product and market innovation, usability and affordability, portability and suitability, performance and reliability, and availability and serviceability (ability of the vendor to provide support).
Gartner gave Oracle9i DBMS a thumbs up, thanks in large part to the companys many alliances. However, Oracle is struggling with sales, with DBMS license revenue falling 20 percent over the past year. In contrast, DB2 and SQL Server have experienced revenue growth, the report said.
