Oracle Corp. on Tuesday will unveil a sharp $1,000 price reduction in its entry-level Oracle 10g Standard Edition One database release during an Oracle 10g-related news conference, officials of the software maker confirmed.
During a briefing today, the Redwood Shores, Calif.-based database company acknowledged plans to announce that Standard Edition One will shift towards dual-processor support, up from its prior support of a single processor limit.
Oracle will drop the price of Standard Edition to $4,995 from $5,995. The move comes as little surprise as new company President Charles Phillips said to financial analysts last week that the database vendor would move to hover near Microsofts SQL Server 2000 list price per processor. SQL Server starts about $5,000.
In addition, Oracles Web site now features downloads of Oracle Database 10g Release 1 (10.1.0.2) for 64-bit Solaris and HP-UX.
An announcement could come as early as Tuesday regarding the timeframe for the Oracle 10g Linux and Microsoft Windows OS release dates. However, it is not expected to occur much longer than a few weeks, the Oracle spokesperson noted.
