The more that data volumes grow, the more their root databases get complicated and the more difficult it gets to manage.

DiskXtender Database Edition aims to ease the pain. From OTG Software Inc., of Rockville, Md., the software virtualizes database storage and gives transparent access to all data, whether its at the application or query level, frequently used, or archived.

The software, unveiled last week, doesnt require changes to database structures, so existing queries will work automatically. Database performance can also be improved because older data is moved to different storage media and is retrieved only to the logical segments relevant to that query.

The product is available now, with pricing varying by system size.
