Atlassian, a provider of collaboration software for product development, has announced GreenHopper 6, the newest release of its agile project management and planning system that simplifies agile adoption for development teams.

Atlassian announced GreenHopper 6 at the Agile 2012 Conference in Dallas. GreenHopper supports and enhances JIRA, Atlassian’s issue and project tracking system, to help software development teams quickly plan, manage, track and continually release quality software. The latest release improves visibility and predictability across teams and projects with a refined user experience, improved visualization and additional reporting capabilities for Scrum and Kanban agile methodologies.

“We can easily track progress against multiple longer-term investments with GreenHopper,” said Jeff Palmer, vice president of engineering at Wize Commerce, a GreenHopper user, in a statement. “GreenHopper has been a critical enabler for our organization’s rollout of Agile this year, and support for Kanban and Scrum allows both our feature and support teams to take advantage of the same tools.”

GreenHopper is easy and intuitive to use, David Bennet, director of application development at Riverside Publishing, said in a statement. “It’s been instrumental in helping us adopt the Agile methodology,” he said.

GreenHopper 6 introduces several new capabilities that leverage the visual power of agile planning to increase the speed of distributed teams and how they collaborate, such as advancing the digital whiteboard by introducing a “single view” board to give individuals and teams quick, custom views of their work so they can quickly sort and shift projects and priorities.

The new release also makes Scrum and Kanban implementation simpler with GreenHopper’s simple reporting and visual indicators that identify scope risk, remaining work, timing issues and team progress. Development teams can also now manage and groom huge backlogs with GreenHopper’s instant filter, Atlassian said.

Meanwhile, deeper JIRA integration makes agile projects easier. Teams can quickly create GreenHopper boards from any JIRA project and jump between the two with a single click. Team Calendars display sprints so teams can better plan around schedules. Instant filtering improves team visibility and zippy in-line editing lets users make changes on the fly.

GreenHopper 6 is the culmination of more than a year of agile product innovation with a consistent cadence of new releases and capabilities, Atlassian said. The latest release focuses on providing clear visibility into team performance through sprint retrospective reports, managing work via swim lanes, and improving predictability on delivery dates with automated measurement of cycle time.

“This release caps a huge year of innovation for GreenHopper,” Audra Eng, Atlassian’s vice president of product management, said in a statement. “GreenHopper 6 will be a difference-maker for teams big and small trying to take the agile plunge. It’s slick, sexy and chock full of goodness.”

More than 650,000 individuals at 6,300 companies use GreenHopper as their agile project management and planning system. Customers include NYSE Euronext, Constant Contact Inc., Abbott Laboratories and Autodesk.

Atlassian is offering a free 30-day trial of GreenHopper 6. GreenHopper and JIRA can be purchased for on-site download starting at $20 for 10 users, or in the cloud starting at $20 per month for 10 users.
