A consortium of storage vendors has banded together to offer free “best effort” technical support to companies that lost business data in the Sept. 11 World Trade Center disaster.

The consortium calls itself the RecoverNY Data Service, and has established a hotline at 1-800-859-8559 and a Web site at www.recoverNYdata.com.

RecoverNY provides an e-mail form for requesting data recovery support on its Web site. The service is offered “on a best-effort basis to companies in the Manhattan area which have lost or damaged tape backup equipment, lost or damaged backup software, or any technical issues related to restoring data from existing tape backup systems. Our goal is to rapidly establish business continuity to these companies!” according to the groups mission statement.

Members of the consortium include: ADIC, Exabyte, Fuji, Imation, Maxell, Overland Data, Qualstar, Quantum/ATL and StorageTek.

The service will provide a single point of contact for a firms data recovery effort. It can coordinate the supply of tape backup equipment, backup software, system integrators, resellers and industry support organizations “in an expeditious manner.”

The hotline and e-mail support will operate on a 24/7 basis until the need for the service fades away. The direct representative for the service is Roberta Halliburton at Overland Data, 1-858-495-4114.
