SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Embarcadero Technologies Inc. has announced a new Eclipse-based SQL development tool, PowerSQL.

Embarcadero announced the availability of PowerSQL at the EclipseCon 2008 conference of Eclipse developers here.

Embarcadero PowerSQL is the San Francisco company’s fourth tool built on the Eclipse framework, said Greg Keller, vice president of product management at Embarcadero. PowerSQL is an integrated development environment (IDE) for SQL developers that can be installed as a standalone application or as an Eclipse plug-in.

The new tool also provides native support for Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase and DB2, as well as Java Database Connectivity (JDBC) support for other prominent database management systems (DBMSes) such as MySQL. PowerSQL runs on both Windows and Linux operating systems.

Features of the new Embarcadero PowerSQL tool include: SQL Code Assist, which checks for object name accuracy and provides real-time SQL syntax validation; SQL Project Insight provides project-level SQL file cataloging and search features; a migration wizard imports data sources; a Data Source Explorer enables users to easily navigate the tool; and formatting profiles ensure consistent, quality code layout, said Greg Nerpouni, Embarcadero’s PowerSQL product manager.

The new tool is in line with Embarcadero’s overall mission of helping its customers to design, develop and manage databases, Keller said. “We’re known for our Switzerland-like style” of supporting a host of different platforms, he added.

“PowerSQL is the SQL EDE for database-oriented professionals,” Keller said. “At the core of all this is we’re providing for the application development professional all the good IDE tooling they are used to seeing in Java or other platforms,” he said.

Moreover, “”With the growing sophistication of J2EE, Ruby on Rails and other development frameworks increasingly dependent on databases, application developers require more depth in knowledge and tooling for the underlying DBMS technologies,” Keller said.

As for the delivery of the tool, “we wanted to move to a high-volume viral approach,” Keller said. “We’ll have a subscription model ranging from $8.25 a month.”

Indeed, Embarcadero PowerSQL is available in three versions worldwide: Personal, Standard and Professional. North American pricing for the Personal Edition begins with annual subscription-based options as low as $8.25 per month per developer, the company said. Embarcadero PowerSQL can be purchased online at www.embarcadero.com/store.

Meanwhile, Keller said Embarcadero also has begun work on other developer tools to cover various parts of the overall application lifecycle, including application and performance tuning, code optimization, profiling and project management. “These are all coming as peripheral technologies after PowerSQL,” Keller said.

This is Darryl Taft, is this the type of tool you would be looking for as an SQL developer?
