On Wednesday, May 8, at 11 a.m. PST/2 p.m. EST/7 p.m. GMT, @eWEEKNews will host its monthly #eWEEKChat. The topic will be “DevOps and Agile Development, Circa 2019” It will be moderated by Chris Preimesberger, eWEEK’s editor in chief.

      Some quick facts:

Topic: “DevOps and Agile Development, circa 2019”

      Date/time: May 8, 2019 @11a.m. PST/2 p.m. EST/7 p.m. GMT

      Hosted by: @eWEEKNews

      Moderator: Chris Preimesberger: @editingwhiz

Tweetchat handle: You can use #eWEEKChat to follow/participate via Twitter itself, but it’s easier and more efficient to use the real-time chat room link at CrowdChat. Instructions are on that page.

We’re Experimenting With a New Format for the Time Being!

For this, eWEEKchat No. 78, refreshing the format: We’re going to do a 20-minute sit-down chat interview with a couple of experts on DevOps and agile development. Then, for the last 10 or 15 minutes, we’ll open the discussion to questions from followers.

This is a departure from our previous #eWEEKchats, in which we posed questions on a specific IT topic every 10 minutes and left it wide open for anybody to comment and/or offer a relevant data point. That format works in many topic areas, but not all of them.

This approach will allow followers to watch the discussion, formulate their own questions and ask away in the latter one-third of the conversation. All of this knowledge can be retained for future reference, too.

Our first guest expert on DevOps and agile development will be Kate Catlin, Product Manager at San Francisco-based CircleCI. CircleCI makes a continuous integration and delivery platform that enables software teams to rapidly release code by automating the build, test, and deploy process.

Our second expert, added just this week, is Oracle Principal Engineer Karthik Gaekwad, who will bring his own perspective from a large-corporation point of view. Both pros will provide valuable context to a rapidly growing development approach.

DevOps an Increasingly important Development Approach

Where once there were difficult professional walls to scale within an enterprise, DevOps is breaking them down and enabling teamwork-type environments.

The goal of agile environments is to use DevOps principles to get developers to move their applications from source code to production as quickly and painlessly as possible. This means breaking down silos and integrating core components for more simplified development using a contiguous pipeline approach.

High-performance IT organizations using the DevOps approach deploy their services much more frequently and many times faster than average shops. They also have fewer failures and recover data much faster in disaster scenarios; all of this directly impacts an enterprise’s profit margin. See this eWEEK slide show for more background.

The reviews and returns on DevOps have been so impactful that more and more companies are turning to this methodology to get development work done. Vendors offering collaboration tools and agile-development platforms are reporting high levels of interest.

Join our discussion with Kate Catlin on May 8 at 11am Pacific/2pm Eastern on #eWEEKchat.
