Swappers Sued
The entertainment industry filed a copyright infringement lawsuit against three popular peer-to-peer file sharing companies that have sprung up after Napster was forced offline. The companies — FastTrack, Grokster and MusicCity Networks — let users exchange full-length movies and music files. More than 1.5 billion digital media files were downloaded via the three services last month, according to researcher Webnoize.
Nortel Challenge
Frank Dunn, 47, was promoted from chief financial officer to CEO of Nortel Networks. He succeeds John Roth, who earlier said he planned to retire. Dunn will have his work cut out for him; he inherits a company expecting a third-quarter loss of $3.6 billion.
Locking Windows
In the wake of the three most virulent virus attacks to hit the Windows operating system — Code Red, Nimda and Sircam — Microsoft has launched the Strategic Technology Protection Program. It includes educating customers about security and selling software such as the Internet Information Server Web server with the most secure configuration as the default.
