IBM has announced new application development tooling to help IBM Power Systems users with an AIX environment maximize their software development experience on the AIX-based Power systems and help smooth the way to building iPhone applications from green screen apps.
The new solutions, which include “first time” capabilities for the AIX community, can increase workload productivity up to 30 percent and eliminate the need to rewrite applications to take advantage of the advanced processing speed of IBM Power 7 processor-based systems, IBM officials said.
Announced on April 13, the new capabilities complement new IBM Power System blades also announced today, and help clients reap the benefits of IBM’s $3 billion investment in developing systems that slash costs and are ready for new advancements in IT, such as the growing use of powerful, real-time business analytics.
With the new tools, for the first time the users of more than 750,000 IBM Power System servers and blades with an AIX environment will have a modern, Eclipse-based application development environment, IBM officials said. This comes via an enhanced version of IBM Rational Developer for Power, which helps to improve quality across the development process.
Moreover, AIX users also now have integrated access to IBM Rational Team Concert for Power Systems Software V2, which helps development teams bridge organizational silos, provide consistent processes, and use common tools. This helps to consolidate and reduce costs, minimize project risk, and improve development agility, IBM said.
Meanwhile, IBM also announced new compilers optimized for Power7. The new compilers automatically generate code to fully exploit Power7 architecture so developers do not need to do this manually, which can take anywhere from weeks to months depending upon the complexity of the application. They also contain usability improvements and enhancements to industry language standards to help improve application performance and developer productivity.
In addition, IBM said organizations that want to create iPhone and iPod touch applications from existing green screen applications now have a simple and straightforward way to do so. IBM is announced a new IBM Rational Host Access Transformation Services V7.5.1 (HATS) user interface modernization solution that offers a low risk and low cost approach to Web- or Service-enable existing green screen applications including native support of iPhones and iPod touch mobile devices. HATS provides a quick and easy to use solution that can provide immediate business value by providing self-serve access to applications and data, IBM officials said.
