With regard to Peter Coffees Dec. 12 Epicenters column, “Dont Take the Wrong Tech Trip”: As a volunteer firefighter for over 25 years, Ive seen multiple motor vehicle accidents where people got so wrapped up in what they were doing—other than driving—that they just drove off the road. A typical scenario is an SUV driver on a curving road talking on a cell phone—the road turns; the driver doesnt.
A well-designed man/machine interface centers important information and prioritizes the rest. Technology cant completely make up for dumbness. But poor design is also dumb.
