My work during the last 15 years has brought me into close contact with a number of large technology companies, most of which hold patents of many flavors. I continue to marvel at how stodgy and ossified the big guys have become.
Once they have made their initial contribution to innovation, they rest on their laurels and collect. They almost universally show no further interest in what I would term progress.
