SAN FRANCISCO—Sun Microsystems Inc. is not waiting for the courts to help push Java out to the masses. At the here Wednesday, Sun announced Java OEM agreements with two major PC makers.
During the morning keynote, both Richard Green, vice president of development platforms at Sun, and Jonathan Schwartz, executive vice president of software at Sun, announced that Hewlett-Packard Co. and Dell Computer Corp. have agreed to bundle Java runtimes on their PCs and devices.
Schwartz asked all HP employees in the audience to stand and be recognized as he thanked the company for its agreement to help make Suns theme of “Java Everywhere” a reality.
Meanwhile, Green said the deal with Dell was signed overnight and that Dell will ship the latest version of the Java runtime with its PCs running both Windows and Linux.
These agreements help push Java out to the masses following Microsoft Corp.s decision not to ship Java with Windows. Sun and Microsoft are locked in litigation over the issue, with Sun awaiting word from a federal appeals court over its request for a court injunction forcing Microsoft to ship Java with Windows. Microsoft appealed a federal judges decision granting the injunction.
