Sun Microsystems Inc. Monday announced it has re-branded all of its iPlanet applications, Forte tools, Star Office and Chili!Soft product lines under the Sun Open Net Environment(Sun ONE) brand name.

Hal Stern, CTO of Suns iPlanet division, said the move integrates Suns key technologies for delivering Web services under the Sun ONE platform, which is targeted at delivering services on demand.

The products offered under the Sun ONE name range from Suns portal server to its development tools to its application server. And the products run on Solaris, Linux, Windows, IBM Corp.s AIX and Hewlett-Packard Co.s HP-UX.

“As weve been trying to deliver under a Web services initiative, we needed to have a united front,” Stern said. He said the re-branding is a much to let customers know what in the Sun ONE environment “as it also is to make it clear whats not in it.”

Stern said the company had been considering the re-branding for some time and has been working on integration across the product lines, but until March 18, part of the technology, specifically iPlanet, was still part of the AOL/Sun alliance—a deal struck when America Online Inc. acquired Time Warner two years ago.

“Weve been doing integration of the protocols into the product stack,” Stern said.

The iPlanet Application Server now becomes the Sun ONE application Server. The iPlanet Web Server becomes the Sun ONE Web Server, and the iPlanet Portal Server and iPlanet Directory Server become the Sun ONE Portal Server and Sun ONE Directory Server, respectively.

Meanwhile, the iPlanet Directory Server, Access Management Edition, becomes the Sun ONE Identity Server. iPlanets messaging server, calendar server and integration server become the Sun ONE Messaging Server, Calendar Server and Integration Server, respectively. Star Office becomes Sun ONE Office; Suns Forte Java tools become the Sun ONE Developer Tools for Java, and Chili!Soft ASP has been renamed Sun ONE Active Server Pages.
