Analyst figures for the 2003 Java application server market are out, and IBM Corp.s WebSphere came out on top with 29.2 percent of the market, topping its primary competitor BEA Systems Inc.
According to numbers from Framingham, Mass.-based IDC that were obtained by eWEEK, IBM had revenues of $630 million for its application server in 2003, while BEA had revenues of $567 million, or 26.3 percent of the market. And while IBM saw revenue growth of 6.4 percent over 2002, BEA actually dropped 4.3 percent.
Meanwhile, Oracle Corp.s numbers proved to be in line with the companys claims as the fastest growing application server. Oracle came in third in the space, with 19.4 percent of the market, and experienced a 15 percent jump in revenue over 2002.
Sun Microsystems Inc., which has been giving a version of its application server away free, came in forth place with a market share of 3.5 percent. Suns application server revenue dropped 15 percent.
Meanwhile, IBM also came out on top on the integration software front with 17.4 percent of the market on revenues of $322 million for 2003. Tibco Software Inc. came in second with 9.1 percent of the market. WebMethods was third with 8 percent of the market, followed by BEA with 7.9 percent of the market on revenues of $147 million. BEAs 2003 integration revenue was up 103 percent over 2002.
