Corel this week will release the English versions of its WordPerfect Office 12 for sale in retail outlets and online. French, German, Spanish and Brazilian-Portuguese versions are set to follow. Pricing for the standard edition of the Microsoft Office alternative starts at $300 for the full version, $150 for the upgrade edition and $100 for the education edition.
The release of the WordPerfect 12 office productivity suite follows the acquisition and delisting of the Canadian software maker by Vector Capital last year. Anish Mehta, a principal at Vector and now the companys interim CEO, said that the company has significantly increased its focus on and investments in WordPerfect and that his goal is to leverage the 18 million WordPerfect users and grow the user base.
“WordPerfect Office 12 has been developed to meet the needs of small to medium-size businesses and consumers, as well as the specific compatibility needs of government and legal customers. The product includes enhanced compatibility with Microsoft Office, integration with Microsoft Outlook and a new workspace manager at a significantly lower price than Microsoft Office,” Mehta told eWeek.
