LibreOffice 5.1 Offers Reorganized User Interface for Its Apps

LibreOffice 5.1, the latest iteration of the widely deployed open-source office suite, adds new user interface elements. We examine highlights of the release.

With LibreOffice 5.1, the open-source office suite provides a reorganized user interface for its applications, including Writer document, Calc spreadsheet and Impress presentation.

As part of the overall user interface improvements, the Writer program now adds a new Style menu to the top navigation, providing an easy interface for formatting style.

The Calc spreadsheet program now benefits from a new Sheet menu navigation item as part of LibreOffice’s user interface improvements.

The user interface improvements in the Impress presentation program in LibreOffice include the addition of a new Slide menu to the top navigation.

With LibreOffice 5.1, there is now the integrated capability to load and save files from remote locations. The menu also enables users to add different file-sharing services, including Google Drive.

One particularly interesting addition to the Writer program is the addition of an Autocorrect options dialogue menu that helps users manually adjust autocorrect terms and styles.

Address lists for mail merging of a document can now be directly integrated with a document.

While LibreOffice has become the de facto standard default office suite on many Linux distributions, it’s also has both Windows and Mac versions.
